Finding New Music

by Steven Metrejean

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the amount of music that’s being released, on an almost daily basis, is making it harder and harder to keep track of your favorite artists. On the opposite side of that coin, it makes discovering and falling in love with new music easier than ever before. Nothing can quite compare to the exhilaration of finding a new song or artist that just speaks to your soul in a new way or that gets you up and dancing or crying like you haven’t in a long time. Interning at an artist management company like Olivia Management, new music comes through our doors consistently—it’s incredible. I recognize that not everyone has this opportunity. This begs the question - what are the most effective and easiest ways to find new music today?

Social Media

Social media: the thing we love to hate and hate to love. But as far as using it as a platform for discovering new music, I find that it is often a great way to explore new music. Whether it’s through searching hashtags or even going through follow lists of artists that you already follow, it’s a good way to expose yourself to all different kinds of artists. Not only seeing what my friends post on their stories, I find that my social media advertisements are really good at targeting me with artists that I might like. We could talk about how the internet uses all of our data to tailor ads for each of us individually, but to be honest, I am not all that upset when I see an ad for a new album or music video from an artist that is spot on with my tastes. The most recent example of this was when I discovered a British artist named Mabel after seeing an Instagram ad for one of her music videos. That song was catchy, and I downloaded it immediately when I heard it for the first time!

Concerts

Some people like to gripe about opening acts at shows. They’ll complain about how they didn’t pay to see this brand-new artist with only one EP out, and that they’re just grinning and bearing it until the headliner hits the stage. But I like to see openers. Oftentimes their music is similar to the artist’s music that I paid to see. Having an opening spot on a big headlining tour is an amazing opportunity for exposure to a huge audience that a new artist would not normally have a chance to perform for. Who doesn’t want to give back to an opener who spends half their set talking about how grateful they are just to be there?

Friends & Family

Some of my favorite conversations with friends and family have turned into hours-long rants and arguments about who’s favorite artist is more under-appreciated and underrated than who’s. We talk about how one genre of music is deeper and more emotional than another, or we just have fun talking about the latest bops that we’ve been dancing in our cars at stoplights to. Never underestimate the power of a friend suggesting you listen to an artist or song they think that you’ll like. If they know you well enough, they only have the best experience for your ears at heart. And I find it’s one of the best ways to show someone that you truly care about them!

My Favorite Covers By Our Artists

by Helena Cook

Every now and again I love looking up covers of random songs I love. Covers are a great way to hear old favorites re-imagined by other artists and help you re-discover the messages of these songs in a new way. They give us both comfort and familiarity, but also excitement from hearing something new. This week I looked up my favorite covers by our artists at Olivia Management, so check them out below.

SHS - “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers

Even though Caitlin and Zack are usually known for their uptempo Americana and Rock sound, the harmonies on this cover are heavenly!

Lydia Luce (ft. Casey Breves) - “Rain and Snow” by Pentangle

I love this folk side of Lydia and love love love her sound and voice on this cover.

Ruthie Collins - “Jolene” by Dolly Parton

Her. Voice. Gives. Me. Chills.

Derek Webb - “Every Grain of Sand” by Bob Dylan

I have to admit, I’ve never been a huge fan of Dylan but I do love his songwriting, and this song was perfect for Derek to cover.

Jill Andrews - “Bermuda Highway” by My Morning Jacket

Jill’s voice is so soothing and everything I needed to hear this afternoon.

What are some of your favorite covers by our artists?

Juggling an Internship, Work and School

By Debbie Undercoffer

At times it seems like your college classes can be too much, but how do you handle going to school, working and taking on an internship? The best piece of advice I can give someone, is to work on your time management skills. If you’re not able to manage your time wisely, you can quickly get overwhelmed, over-worked and begin to miss important deadlines. There are a few things that I do to keep things in order and hopefully they will help you do the same:

First, I always start out by writing down my priorities and putting them in order. Say you have a class starting at 8am, then your internship from 10am-4pm and your shift at work starts at 5pm. Map out every single day and write it down so you have a visual aid. Once you have that mapped out, then break down each responsibility for each activity. For example, you have 2 assignments due on Monday for that 8am class. Then your internship is asking that you have a blog post written so you can post it as soon as you get in. Lastly, your shift manager needs you to have the budget report completed by the end of the week. If you write down everything that is needed for each activity and start to prioritize, then you’ll be able to manage your time correctly and make sure you hit all your deadlines.

Separating things out and prioritizing them like this will help you plan out your week and will give you a little more free time than if you did it on the fly and realize at 10:30pm on a Sunday that you haven’t started a single one of the assignments for the next day. It’s important to include giving yourself a little time to just relax. Don’t over-book or over-commit to things and burn yourself out. Your mental health should always come first. If you start feeling over-worked and you notice that things are starting to slip through the cracks, start asking for help. Maybe one of your classmates can help you study for that exam, or one of your co-workers can step in and assist with a project. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Sometimes even having someone pick up dinner for you can make a all the difference.

Of course everyone is different and the way I do things may not work for you, and that’s ok! Go and shuffle that playlist of your favorite Olivia Management artists to listen to while you set calendar reminders for yourself, leave sticky notes on your mirror, or make a calendar and hang it on your wall. Just be sure to find a process that works best for you and stick to it!

Smooth Hound Smith Throwback

By: Kennady Newsome

If you’re like me and a serious Smooth Hound Smith fan, then you are likely aware that the duo just released their new album Dog In A Manger this year. The album is filled with holy harmonies and compelling storytelling. You can get the album here!

However, I deem myself as a person who was born in the wrong era. I long for the traditional rock ‘n roll sound enlaced with country and blues. Smooth Hound Smith’s “Stopgap Woman Blues” from their 2016 album Sweet Tennessee Honey is just that. The song takes me back to a time that I have never known, but have always wished to. Check out this throwback song below:

Olivia Management's Final Shows of 2019

by Helena Cook

As the end of the year approaches, the tour life of our artists here in Nashville is slowing down little by little. While our artists embark on their last dates of 2019, a few are still left! Check out the final tour dates for the year for Smooth Hound Smith, Lydia Luce, Jill Andrews and Derek Webb below. This may be your last chance to see them before Christmas and the New Year come into full swing! Ticket links are hanging out down there, too. For our Nashville neighbors, check out those upcoming local dates—you won’t want to miss it.

Music I've Been Digging

by Steven Metrejean

Aside from my first music love of pop and R&B, I have grown to be a fan of many of our artists who range in the folk and Americana realm. I’m coming to find that genre can be an incredibly restrictive qualifier placed on music. As far as I’m concerned, as long as the music is enjoyable, then it’s good music! This is a fairly comprehensive, but by no means extensive, list of the music that I have been digging lately:

“You” by James Arthur

I have been a fan of James Arthur now for a few years, and it is his voice that I can never get enough of. His natural rasp, his range, and his ability to convey the most desperate and heavy of emotions through my headphones or speakers makes me envious, to say the least. Many of his songs are on the heavy side of lyrical content – his struggles with addiction, anxiety, family troubles, and struggling with fame. I discovered his sophomore album, “Back from the Edge” about two years ago during a time in my life where hearing someone sing about those issues was very familiar and therapeutic. “You” is James’s most recent release, coming out only last week and it has been on repeat everywhere I go. It was hard to wait so long for new music from him, but he made it worth the wait. Overall, the album is a bit more optimistic, but his voice has lost none of its power and emotive potency.

“Truth Is” by Sabrina Claudio

Delving into the R&B world, Sabrina Claudio is one of my favorite R&B newcomers of the past couple of years. Again, it’s her voice that has me so captivated. Whoever she works with on her vocal production and recording is an absolute genius! Her lyrics are so full of imagery and intimacy that you can’t help but feel like she’s crooning directly into your ear. Her latest album, “Truth Is”, capitalizes on these strengths even more. She is growing up before our eyes, and her material continues to broach more mature themes – but she is never gratuitous. Plus, she has a song with ZAYN on this record, so One Direction fans should be excited about that!

Forces” by Jill Andrews

I’m not sure how much I can say without giving too much away, but Jill Andrews is working on a new album and ooooooooh my god it is SO good!! “Forces” is the second single from the upcoming album, and it is just phenomenal. Her voice has such a lived-in quality to it, and her lyrics about “Forces that we can’t control” are very poignant to the close-to-graduating college student that I am. If there is one thing that I have learned over the past three and a half years of life on my own, it’s that sometimes life happens. And most of the time life is completely out of our control. After a little listening party we had with some of Jill’s biggest fans, this song just gets me so excited for the entire album!

“Turn Off the Light” by Kim Petras

If you’re a fan of pop music, chances are you’ve heard of this German pop princess in the past couple of years. She has burst onto the scene with her ear for a hook and some of the best synth-pop production in the past decade and I love every second of it! “Turn Off the Light” is her Halloween themed project that actually expands on a similar project she released in the fall of 2018. Songs like “There Will Be Blood”, “Bloody Valentine”, “Massacre”, “Demons”, and “Everybody Dies” are just a sample of what to expect from the album. Petras really leans into the camp and spectacle of the spookiest time of year, and she does so with some of the best pop songs to be released in 2019. It’s perfect to put on at your costume party this year!

“Velvet: Side A – EP” by Adam Lambert

After four years, we finally have new music from Adam Lambert. If you weren’t a huge fan of his 2015 album, “The Original High”, because of its electropop and house music roots, then you might be a big fan of this new project. Featuring all organic instrumentation, Lambert is harking back to his roots in glam rock and classic rock leaning pop music. His voice is stronger than ever (if you can sense a theme, it’s pretty obvious that I love a good singer). Listen to “Closer to You” for a master class in power balladry that is sure to blow you out of the water!

As I said before, this is by no means a complete list of all of the music that I have been recently digging. But I think it’s a pretty good sample of the music that has me inspired and excited to be starting a career in this industry. Let us know if you’re digging any of these artists or what music you’re diving into this week!

A Day in the Life of an Intern

By: Debbie Undercoffer

As an intern at Olivia Management, I can honestly say you will NEVER be bored. In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve had the opportunity to gain hands-on learning in multiple departments— all ranging from tour marketing and branding to video editing and social media engagement. We even get to sit in on the weekly company meetings to gain insight on the daily operations and projects many artist management companies run and how to work them professionally and efficiently. We attend the local shows and album release parties for the artists to experience first-hand the end result of all the hard work.

This experience has been better than I could’ve ever imagined and much more interactive than I’ve heard about other larger companies! I’m so thankful for the opportunity to join the team and learn so much from them. The staff here are more like a family and they are always ready to explain things to us or teach new things that we don’t understand in the industry. I learn something new every day and I’ll leave here feeling like I have a better knowledge of the music industry and how things work!

Some of My Favorite Fall Songs

by Kailey Prall

What’s up, OM friends?! We are settling in here at the office, the sweaters are on and the cold breeze finally has blown in which means fall favorites! Here are some of my favorite fall songs. A mix of some new ones, old ones, and of course some OM artists! Here we go!

  1. Ruthie Collin’s - Joshua Tree - This song makes me want to book a flight to Joshua Tree to see what the hype is about. Seriously though, these haunting vocals and acoustic guitar get me excited about the leaves changing.

  2. The Zombies - Time of The Season - It’s spooky season y’all! One of my year round favorites hits hard around Halloween. Stay groovin’ and stay ghoulin’.

  3. Wallows - Just Like a Movie - A little dreamy California riff for your dreary fall days.

  4. Lydia Luce - Azalea - This song wraps me up in a blanket and makes me hot apple cider. Total comfy, cozy, perfection.

  5. Billie Marten - Cursive - This dreamy song is what a fall sunset would sound like.

  6. Smooth Hound Smith - I Got My Eyes on You - The air is fresh and so is this song (terrible joke) but trust me, this song is amazing and should be played very loudly with lots of dancing.

Well that’s about it! Just a few of my favorites this fall that have been on repeat! Cuddle up and jam out.

My Thoughts on “Dang Dallas”

By Debbie Undercoffer

Our very own artist, Ruthie Collins, recently released the single “Dang Dallas” and I am obsessed! She has such an angelic voice, and the simple melody really makes it stand out. On top of that, the lyrics really pull at your heart strings and gives you that nostalgic feeling. Anyone who is homesick, going through a break up or just feeling down, this is the song for you. It’ll hit all the feels and help you move on. I personally felt at peace while listening to this song, and knew that whatever was bothering me would get better in time and to just keep going. Check out “Dang Dallas” below and let us know what you think! Before you listen, put on your yoga pants, grab some tissues, a blanket and ice cream and get ready to let it out, girl.

“I wrote "Dang Dallas" about a year ago, by myself in my airstream. I wrote this song about regret, about not saying the things you feel in the moment when you are feeling them, and about the consequences of not putting yourself out there.” -Ruthie Collins

What I Learned at my Internship this Week

by Kailey Prall

Hello, friends! Fall is officially here and that means settling in and getting cozy (even though Nashville is 95 degrees). And let me tell you, I am getting cozy as an intern here at Olivia Management. My first month here has been filled with Americanafest, live music, lots of coffee, and puppy cuddles! Here are just a few things I have learned in the past week.

IT’S OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP!

I feel like this is something you hear from a young age: ask for help when you need it. But sometimes that can be tough! It’s not always easy asking your bosses and co-workers for help, but we’re not all Wonder Woman all the time. Whether it’s a processes question, bouncing ideas off one another, or simply asking what a word means. I feel totally empowered asking meaningful questions and ultimately growing my music biz knowledge.

ruthievision.jpg

IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN DO IT! (seriously.)

I had SUCH a cool and fun experience last Thursday with one of our artists, Ruthie Collins (her music makes me sway-dance around my kitchen in my clogs. If you haven’t listened, what are you doing with your life?). Ruthie is going on tour soon with the upcoming release of her new record, so we decided to have a little vision board party. It was incredibly inspiring to see her dreams and aspirations for her upcoming tour, and to see how much manager Erin Anderson cares about her artists. It was a great reminder of why we do what we do, helping great people get great music out there!

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK.

I have the privilege of working with some pretty amazing people. Day in and day out, everyone works together to create an awesome flow. I have loved learning new systems and new ways to communicate. Seeing your team work hard and killin’ it every day makes you want to do the same!

Teamwork quote _ Yoga Inspiration on Instagram_.jpeg

So thats all I have for now my dear friends. But I can’t wait to share more in the next few months!

Steven's Internship Introduction

fullsizeoutput_1637.jpeg

What do you want to get out of this internship?

I have been lucky enough to have had previous internships in many different areas of the music industry, but this will be my first time tackling artist management. I like to stay on my toes and be in situations where quick thinking and adaptability are at the top of the list for required skills. As an aspiring artist and passionate singer, I have always felt like finding a career where I can bridge the gap between artists and business people. I want to build connections and learn what the day-to-day life of an artist manager is like. I want to learn about what makes artist managers so passionate about their artists and why they do what they do.

What do you love to do? Hobbies? Activities?

I love to sing. Anyone who spends just a small amount of time with me will soon hear how often I sing. I sing to myself mostly, and it is something that I have been doing for as long as I can remember. I love talking to people and hearing their stories. I believe that every single person in this world has a unique story that has formed them into the person they are in that very moment, and I love to use whatever platform I give those stories a life of their own. I enjoy a night in with friends and family over a night out, and my favorite memories with my closest friends involve Netflix, ice cream, other assorted junk food, and an abundance of cuddles. I love exploring new places, and I enjoy time outdoors as well, even though my incredibly pale skin would tell you otherwise!

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Mexican food. Hands down.

Favorite musicians, artists, genres, equipment, shows you’ve been to... tell us anything you love about music!

I have been singing for as long as I can remember, and my parents have told me that they cannot remember if I began singing or speaking first! Music has always been a part of my life. I joined my first choir when I was only eight years old, and I have been hooked ever since. Music has brought me to more than forty out of fifty states, to some of the biggest concert halls in the country, and allowed me to perform for thousands of people. I love that music is something that all people can relate to. It is a universal force that drives culture and civilization forward. I love how experimental music can be, and how there are artists who constantly push the boundaries of what is popular or pleasing to an audience’s ear. My music tastes are fairly mainstream, but I have discovered some more unknown artists that I enjoy. Some of my favorite artists are Demi Lovato, Jessie J, Sam Smith, Tori Kelly, Halsey, James Arthur, H.E.R., Little Mix, and Sabrina Claudio to name a few.

Why did you choose to intern here?

After taking Erin’s entrepreneurship class at Belmont University, I knew that if ever the opportunity arrived to learn from her again that I needed to take it. Her story of being a self-made woman in the music industry was so inspiring to me, and I could not wait for the opportunity to pick her brain once more. During the interview process, I loved how the office felt like a home and a family, and it was something that I wanted to be a part of!

What is your favorite part about Nashville?

I love that Nashville has all of the amenities of a large city but is still small enough to feel like a home. I still see people that I know in the most random of places around town, and I feel like that would never happen in a larger city. Nashville is also a hub for music genres outside of its image as the country music capital of the world. So many of my favorite artists who are not country artists tour and perform in venues around Nashville, and I love that there is such a variety of entertainers who call this place home.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

(((A functioning adult who doesn’t panic 😂)))

I have wanted to be a singer since I was six years old. I want to bring the term artist back to its original glory days, where an artist was a singer. Today, the trend is to be a singer and songwriter who writes their own lyrics and tells their own stories. While I enjoy telling my own stories, I feel there are so many people with stories that are more deserving to be told in a larger narrative. Artists like Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland are all icons in their own right, but many of their signature songs were not written by them. They were artists who could empathize with someone else’s thoughts and lyrics and make them their own. That is the kind of artist I want to become.

Kailey's Internship Introduction

What do you want to get out of this internship?

I am incredibly excited to learn about tour promotion and booking through this internship, as well as managing effectively! As an artist myself, I cannot wait to learn everything that goes into being successful in todays industry.

What do you love to do? Hobbies? Activities?

I love writing and being outdoors, and religiously going to Buffalo Exchange. You’ll also usually find me in a spin class or watching Grey’s Anatomy.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

If I could eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be BAGELS!

Favorite musicians, artists, genres, equipment, shows you’ve been to...tell us anything you love about music.

I started going to concerts at a very young age with friends because I live so close to New York and Philadelphia, and I took interest in the Philly music scene as an artist and all my friends were musicians. I have a wide range in music taste but some of my favorites are the Eagles, America, Carol King, Catfish in the Bottlemen, First Aid Kit, Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty and Hippo Campus.

Why did you choose to intern here?

I chose to intern at Olivia Management because I love what it stands for. Erin really created a space where the artist can thrive authentically and keeps the artist’s vision alive. As well as being a female run company, I believe that it is incredibly important in today’s music industry, especially in Nashville, to give women a platform to thrive and succeed.

What is your favorite part about Nashville?

My favorite part of Nashville is the small town vibe it has within a big city. I also LOVE hot chicken, shout out to Prince’s.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

When I grow up I would love to be a touring artist and songwriter. I used to want to be a tattoo artist, but I can only draw stick figures so I had to shelf that dream for now.

What We Learned From Our Internship

Autumn Johnson

headshot.jpg

I find it’s easier to reflect on what you’ve learned at the very end of an internship rather than each day, because while every day is a new learning experience, I find that it’s much easier to look at the sum of all that I’ve learned over time. Here are just a few of the things I’ve learned from Olivia Management.

  • A little affirmation goes a long way. Every Monday we write down on little pieces of paper what we appreciate about someone else in the room. We read them all out loud to each other, and they always give us a boost for the rest of the week. I always feel more motivated to work and improve my work when I know that someone notices and appreciates what I do. And taking the time to think about others also helps me better appreciate them.

  • Just like what you say reflects who you are, your social media is a reflection of who you are. This is important because when it comes to having an artist career, social media is a big part of getting yourself out there. The way you present yourself on social media is really important and understanding the way people will perceive what you post on social media, can help you better communicate who you are to your followers.

  • People still love a good story. People seem to become more attached to art that tells a story. When there’s more to a song than the surface level, people will stick around long enough to find out it is. Social media posts that tell a story are more likely keep people reading and sharing their thoughts. Stories can be resonated with and can make listeners feel less alone. The artists at OM do it well with their songs and the team at OM works hard to make sure those stories get heard by more people.

I am so grateful I got to intern at Olivia Management and have the opportunity to work in such a loving, supportive atmosphere. P.S. Thanks Rachel for the headshots!

Madeleine Kelson

IMG_8021.jpg

These past few months at Olivia Management have been awesome. Literally. I am in awe of the amount and quality of work done by everyone here. I am even more impressed by the fact that they do it all without losing their minds, and on top of that have the time and patience to teach us. I have learned a ton. Here are just a few of the things I learned about artist management this summer.

  • Show Up

It seems simple and obvious, but it is so important. Whether it’s showing up to shows and events, or just showing up to work, people notice when you’re there, and they notice when you’re not. It’s how you get to know everyone, and how you show your artists that you care.

  • Be a Good Communicator

Ask questions. Be direct. Tell people when something isn’t working, and tell them when they’ve done a good job. It doesn’t do anyone any good to pretend you have things under control when you don’t, or to tell someone a job is done when it isn’t. It only pushes your problem further down the line, and if anything, makes it into a bigger deal. On the other side of that, tell people when they’ve done a good job. Everyone likes to feel appreciated, and it encourages people to work harder, and stay invested in the team.

  • Slow Down and Focus

Getting work done on time is important, but only if it’s done right. Details are so important. A dropped zero, or a misplaced period could cost your artist money. A little typo on a show date  can turn into a big mess. It’s better to work slowly and diligently, than quickly and carelessly.

The whole OM crew is incredible, and I am so sad to leave them. If you have a chance to work with them, intern for them, or just be in their brilliant, genius, magical presence, DO IT!!!! I feel lucky to have gotten to learn from them, and I will miss them all immensely.

I have learned so much from my time here at Olivia Management. All of these women and my fellow interns have created an environment that is both fun and productive at the same time. In an industry that is so stressful, the Olivia Management gets tasks done with grace and taught us to do the same. Here are my top three things I learned at Olivia Management:

  • Take Initiative

If there’s an unassigned task that no one is tackling, take it! If there is something that needs to be done that no one else is doing, be the person that gets it done. Not only will this help out the company, but it will make yourself feel good as well.

  • Try New Things

This may seem like an obvious one, but always find new tasks or projects where you have to ask questions or explore something unfamiliar. Knowledge is power, and the only way to get that knowledge is to try something new.

  • Be Yourself

Although this may seem like an elementary school rule, but it is so important during your professional career. During an internship, it is easy to get caught up in trying to be perfect or acting a certain way to fit the mold of the company. Here at Olivia Management, everyone has their own personalities and their all fully embraced. The more I relaxed and became myself, the more I felt embraced here at my internship!

My time here at Olivia Management has been so valuable. They are some of the hardest working people I know! If your looking to work in artist management, I urge you to consider interning at Olivia Management. You won’t regret it!
