Here at Olivia Management, there are three things we love more than anything. Good music, Good people, and most importantly- Good food. We often find ourselves exploring Nashville’s finest eateries but wish there was some way we knew exactly what to listen to while satisfying our cravings.

After further investigation and finding what paired best with Nashville’s most popular spots; we have made it easy for you to take the day for yourself, plug in your headphones, and munch munch crunch crunch! Follow along as we show you what songs by our artists will pair best with the top restaurants in Music City.

To start us off, Picture this: It’s Tuesday Morning. You decide instead of working from home today, you’re going out of your comfort shell and getting work done at Milk & Honey. What are you ordering? Nova Lox Bagel. What are you listening too? Morning is Made by Hush Kids. The perfect start to the day.

 

615 Deli - “Trying” by The Sewing Club

As the afternoon comes and you’re ready for lunch, not only do you need the perfect sandwich or burger combo, but you also need that perfect song to keep you going and energized. The Sewing Club is offering you just this. “Trying” is the perfect afternoon pump up paired with The Legend Sandwich.

 

Pastaria Italian Dining - “Landslide” by Alex Blue

Entertain us one again if you will. It’s a rainy Friday evening and after the long week you just had, you want nothing more than to order takeout and sit on the couch with a glass of wine and some Italian food. We believe that a bowl of Chitarra al Pomodoro pairs perfectly with your favorite white wine and Alex Blue’s cover of Landslide.

 

Cafe Intermezzo - “Hold onto My Hand” by Peter Groenwald

For dessert, Cafe Intermezzo is bringing the cake and Peter Groenwald is bringing the tunes. Red Velvet Torte and “Hold onto My Hand.” That’s it.

 

Dino’s Dive Bar and Grill - “One in the Morning” by Smooth Hound Smith

Lastly, always a fan favorite- Dino’s. Dino’s is a Nashville classic and we believe that Smooth Hound Smith is your best bet when it comes to your late night feasting with the besties at one in the morning.

My Favorite Songs by Smooth Hound Smith

When I was first researching Olivia Management, before I applied to intern here, I looked through all of their artists’ catalogs. I was really into everything that they put out, but I was particularly drawn towards one duo, and that was Smooth Hound Smith. I was obsessed with their harmonies, a mix of country and blues. Honestly, it was hard for me to even make that comparison because I think that they have so many different genres of music stitched into their three albums that it’s almost impossible to pin them within one.

But my all-time favorite song by them came out after I had discovered them. I would have to say that their newest single, “Little Rock N Roll Clubs”, is by far my favorite song that they’ve ever released. I had the privilege of listening to it to create social media content prior to the release, and I found myself walking around my house, doing something mundane like cooking or cleaning, and singing the song. I wanted to play it on Spotify so badly that I even looked it up a few times, remembering mid-search that the single wasn’t out until August 28th. “Little Rock N Roll Clubs” is a tribute to independent music venues across the world that have been getting hit hard due to concerts and other events being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This song was written with Save Our Stages, the National Independent Venue Association, and the National Independent Talent Organization in mind. So not only is it an amazing song, it also has some purpose behind it, which makes you feel good.

My second favorite song by Smooth Hound Smith is for sure “Steal Your Crown” off of their 2013 record, Smooth Hound Smith. This song has such a real rockabilly feel, like they were playing homage to The Black Keys and Thickfreakness. Every last detail down to the harmonica, tambourine, fuzzy guitar, and the steady drumbeat compliment Zack’s growly vocals and Caitlin’s harmonies perfectly. This song makes you want to get up and sing a karaoke song at a dive bar. I love to play this one while driving on the highway, with all of my windows down. And I’m sure you’d feel the same way.

My third and final favorite song would definitely be “Stopgap Woman Blues” off of their sophomore album, Sweet Tennessee Honey. For some reason, whenever I listen to this song, I think of “Black Country Woman” by Led Zeppelin. I don’t know if it’s the way the drums enter later on in the song, or the gritty guitar melody, but it gets me every time. The music video for this song also makes me laugh, but it’s true.

And I’ve missed so many amazing songs that Smooth Hound Smith has recorded, because if I listed all of the songs that I loved by them, this post be way too long long. They really do blend so many genres together to make an extremely unique genre of their own.

With that in mind, I decided it was time to update my OM Chill Songs playlist from last summer. The new and improved playlist is longer and chiller than ever before. It is the perfect soundtrack to your walk around the neighborhood, the aimless drive you take to kill time, or even as a musical interlude for the time between dinner and your nightly Netflix binge. A Playlist of Music I'm Digging

If you ever see me walking around Nashville or on-campus, my headphones are most likely in and on. Sometimes I just drive around and listen to music because I love it so much. Listening to multiple genres which is fun because one minute I could be listening to a slow acoustic song by Jill Andrews and the next song up is “Like a Girl” by Lizzo. If you’re like me, you tend to listen to the same three playlists with the same songs curated for any possible mood. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with this—it’s encouraged, actually. But sometimes it’s fun to get a little crazy and listen to songs we haven’t heard before. Unfortunately, this takes a lot of will power to go and seek music that you may find somewhat enjoyable (I know I can’t be alone in this). Lucky for you I’ve done the work necessary. All you have to do is press play!

My Favorite Covers By Our Artists

Every now and again I love looking up covers of random songs I love. Covers are a great way to hear old favorites re-imagined by other artists and help you re-discover the messages of these songs in a new way. They give us both comfort and familiarity, but also excitement from hearing something new. This week I looked up my favorite covers by our artists at Olivia Management, so check them out below.

SHS - “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers

Even though Caitlin and Zack are usually known for their uptempo Americana and Rock sound, the harmonies on this cover are heavenly!

Lydia Luce (ft. Casey Breves) - “Rain and Snow” by Pentangle

I love this folk side of Lydia and love love love her sound and voice on this cover.

Ruthie Collins - “Jolene” by Dolly Parton

Her. Voice. Gives. Me. Chills.

Derek Webb - “Every Grain of Sand” by Bob Dylan

I have to admit, I’ve never been a huge fan of Dylan but I do love his songwriting, and this song was perfect for Derek to cover.

Jill Andrews - “Bermuda Highway” by My Morning Jacket

Jill’s voice is so soothing and everything I needed to hear this afternoon.

Smooth Hound Smith Throwback

If you’re like me and a serious Smooth Hound Smith fan, then you are likely aware that the duo just released their new album Dog In A Manger this year. The album is filled with holy harmonies and compelling storytelling. You can get the album here!

However, I deem myself as a person who was born in the wrong era. I long for the traditional rock ‘n roll sound enlaced with country and blues. Smooth Hound Smith’s “Stopgap Woman Blues” from their 2016 album Sweet Tennessee Honey is just that. The song takes me back to a time that I have never known, but have always wished to. Olivia Management's Final Shows of 2019

Autumn’s Favorite OM Artist Songs

This summer, I have had the pleasure of getting to know a handful of new artists, in a genre that I don’t find myself listening to as often. Nonetheless, I have still enjoyed this adventure, and I wanted to the share the songs that have stuck out to me during my time here. It’s always hard to pick a favorite song from an artist, so really, a more accurate title would be “the ones I’m digging right now”.

“Dog in a Manger” - Smooth Hound Smith

Whenever I fall into one of those “roots rock” or folk moods, I will definitely be going back to this song and the rest of Smooth Hound Smith’s discography. Seriously, this is so good.

“S.H.a.M.E.” - Matthew Mayfield

As someone who tends more towards rock music than any other genre, I really appreciate Matthew Mayfield’s style. His whole album Gun Shy is fantastic, but I definitely love his song “S.H.a.M.E.” for its depth, relatability, and its message of hope. I’m also a big fan of using strings in guitar heavy songs. (Also, sidenote: I LOVE Matthew’s cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on YouTube)

“Tell That Devil” - Jill Andrews

My true favorite Jill Andrews song is one that has yet to be released (shhh), but since I can’t tell you about that, my other favorite is “Tell That Devil”. I love it’s upbeat vibe and it’s eerie sensibilities.

“Good As New” - Jenn Grinels

I absolutely love the bouncy, jazzy vibe of this song. I wish there were more artists who brought this kind of vibe to their music, no matter the genre. This song reminds me of an artist I used to listen to a lot when I was younger, Francesca Battistelli.

“The Spirit vs. The Kick Drum” - Derek Webb

This song has a nice groove with an important message. In this song Derek draws a distinction between authentic faith and a faith built on feelings that ultimately don’t last. If you’re a little confused, that’s totally okay. If you want to know more, you can check this blog post which breaks down the song.

“Talking to Myself” - Hush Kids

As someone who prefers uptempo songs, this Hush Kids tune is especially enjoyable for me. I love the background vocals in this song, and how they help make it memorable for me.

“Me and Emmylou” - Ruthie Collins

Who doesn’t love a good song of confidence and empowerment? “She thinks she’s the queen of some Mexican desert”. What a lyric!

“Azalea” - Lydia Luce

Last but certainly not least, “Azalea” by Lydia Luce is an excellent track. I love the combination of the heavy, distorted guitar and the strings. Lydia’s thick, strong vocals also fit the whole vibe of this song. Catch her live in the next few Wednesdays at The 5 Spot in Nashville, TN. (BTW, Lydia looks exquisite in this video)

I hope this list helps you find your new favorite artist! These are my personal picks, and I’m sure others in the office have different songs they like best. Be on the lookout for new music from each of our artist. First up: Smooth Hound Smith’s new album coming August 9th!
